FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Coaching

Meadow

What is coaching?

Coaching is a powerful, collaborative relationship between a coach and a willing individual which enables - through a process of discovery, goal setting, and strategic actions - the realization of extraordinary results.

Coaching is also a body of knowledge, a technology, and a style of relating that focuses on the development of human potential.

Coaching is interdevelopmental in that the collaboration develops both the coach and the individual being coached.

What is corporate coaching?

How does coaching relate to other process improvement programs?

Coaching complements and enhances other process improvement programs such as six sigma and re-engineering.

Other process improvement programs typically focus on tools, techniques and work processes, but rarely on interpersonal factors.

Coaching specifically addresses these interpersonal factors and can dramatically increase the likelihood of success of those programs.

As a technology for performance improvement, coaching provides a structure for measurement of quantifiable results.

How is coaching different from performance correction?

Performance correction addresses less than acceptable performance as demonstrated by a pattern of behaviors or attitudes that falls below the established standards.

The goal of performance correction is the resolution of problem behaviors or attitudes and re-establishment of consistently acceptable performance.

Coaching is a collaborative process that focuses on the growth and development of the individual, not just fixing a problem.

How is coaching different from training?

Training is a process whereby a "teacher" delivers a prescribed curriculum or body of information to "students", often for the purpose of preparing them for particular roles or skills.

Training does not typically take into consideration the uniqueness of peoples' existing skills, motivation or commitment, and it does not usually result in radical shifts in people's thinking and actions.

Training tends to reinforce traditional organizational structures and dependency on top down direction and decision making.

Coaching guides the person being coached through the learning process.

How is coaching different from mentoring?

Mentoring is a supportive relationship in which a more experienced individual passes on his or her knowledge, wisdom and experience to someone less experienced.

Often, mentoring relationships are utilized to pass on informal organizational cultural norms and to assist the individual in making connections which are important to career advancement.

Mentoring relationships are not usually interdevelopmental and may foster dependency on the part of both the mentor and individual.

Mentoring tends to reinforce traditional organizational structures defined by hierarchy and top down decision making.

Coaching is a guiding process that does not make assumptions about the relative status of the coach or the person being coached.

How is coaching different from consulting?

Coaching is somewhat like consulting. However, the coach stays with the client to help implement the new skills, changes and goals, to make sure that they really happen.

In the words of Thomas Leonard, founder of CoachU:
"All coaches are consultants, few consultants are coaches."

How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is not therapy. Therapy typically works on fixing something that is broken, often something with roots in the past. Coaches don't work on "issues" or get into the past, but rather focus on the development of the whole person. Coaching may aid in resolving personal issues, but it should not be the focus of a coaching relationship.

How is coaching different from sports?

Coaching includes several principles from sports coaching, like teamwork, going for the goal, being your best. Unlike sports coaching, most professional coaching is not competition or win/lose based. Coaches focus on strengthening their clients' skills, not on helping them beat the other team. Coaches look for win/win solutions.

How is coaching different from a best friend?

A best friend is wonderful to have, but is your best friend a professional who you will trust to work with you on the most important aspects of your life or business? Have both - a best friend and a coach.

People hire a coach because they want more, they want to grow and they want to do things more easily.

Coaches help a client get all three, quickly.

Can everyone in an organization be coached?

Coaching is for everyone, but the truth is that not everyone is ready for coaching. Roughly 15-20% of individuals in an organization are probably not coachable at any given time.

This is because they are unwilling, have serious performance problems, or are planning to retire or move on to another job.

As the organization begins its transformation, standards are naturally elevated, and the organizational culture begins to expect more from everyone.

Individuals who can't or won't work adapt their performance to the new expectations, will move on, either because they realize their old work habits no longer add value to the organization, or the organization removes them.

In addition, the organization becomes better positioned to attract and retain higher caliber talent than previously.

Does the coach work on personal goals or business/professional goals?

A coach can work on both. The line between personal and business life blurring, and the coach is the only professional trained to work with all aspects of you.

A personal coach does just what an athletic coach or music teacher does, only in a fuller and bigger way. A coach challenges you and takes the time to find out what winning in life means to you. A coach is your partner in living the life you know you can accomplish, personally and professionally. A coach is someone to hold you accountable for your life, to make sure you really do live up to your potential.

No matter where you are in life, there is always a desire for more. More success, more money, closer relationships, a deeper feeling of meaning in life, etc. It is the nature of people to want to attain more, become more, be more, and we all struggle with how to get what we're looking for.

Most people believe that "hard work and doing it on your own" are the keys to finding the life, success, money, or happiness that they seek. They believe that a price must be paid to attain what they want, and often that price is poor health, not having enough time to enjoy life, strained family relationships or lessened productivity. The saddest part is that, even though this effort may result in more of something, it is often not the something you had in mind, and you end up back where you started, or worse, further from your real intentions.

Athletes and performers know about this trap. They know they need someone else, a trained someone else to help them set goals, discover real needs, and work effectively toward ultimate goals of excellence. So, they are willing to hire a coach or a teacher. No serious athlete or musician would expect to progress very far without one.

What does a coach focus on?

Coaches focus where their clients need them the most.

Part of their discussions often include:
  • Getting the client's Personal Foundation strengthened.
  • Helping the client beef up their Reserve.
  • Helping the client set goals based on individual Personal Values.
  • By including these with what each client wants, coaches help their clients have fewer problems and focus on what will make them the most successful. Clients really enjoy this approach.

Top

Why does coaching work?

Coaching works for several reasons:
  • Synergy between the coach and client creates momentum.
  • Better goals are set -- ones that naturally pull the client toward the goal rather than goals that require the client to push themselves to the goal.
  • The client develops new skills, and these skills translate into more success.

Why is coaching becoming so popular?

The reasons vary, but here are three of the most common ones.

Many people are tired of doing what they think they "should" do and are ready to do something special and meaningful for the rest of their lives. One problem is that many can't see what this is or, if they can, they can't find a way to reorient their life around it. A coach can help them do both.

Many people are realizing how simple it can be to accomplish something that several years ago might have felt out of reach or like a pipedream. A coach has a large tool kit to help the Big Idea become a Reality. Fortunately, many people now have the time and resources to invest in themselves to achieve this kind of growth.

Many people are becoming increasingly willing to look at, and consider, the notion of spirituality or "How connected you are with yourself, others and the world around you". Many coaches are spiritually based and help the clients to tune in better to themselves and to others.

Do people who are already doing really well in their lives ever need a coach?

They might not need a coach, but it may still be helpful to find the answers to questions like: Are they doing what they most enjoy? Are they tolerating anything? Is life easy? Are they going to be financially independent? Do they have what they most want?

Often, people need to expect more out of their lives. A coach can help in this process.

Top

Can a dependency be created between coach and client?

Not really. The client may "need" the coach in order to maximize an opportunity or accelerate their growth, yet not be "dependent" on the coach. Anyone who's working on major changes "needs" structure, advice, support and a place to brag, so, in that sense, the coach is certainly helpful, but an emotional, psychological dependency is not created.

The coach works with people who are just fine and strong enough on their own. Remember, we're not resolving issues here or healing anything broken. The coach is simply helping the client to create a better future.

Top

Can coaching hurt someone?

No. Remember, coaches aren't doing psychological work. They're not trying to control the client's thinking. They're not cattle prods; they're partners.

Top

Can I hire a coach just for a short-term, special project?

Yes. Some clients hire a coach to help them accomplish specific goals or projects. Usually, however, the client keeps working with the coach after that because there are even more interesting things to accomplish.

Top

How long must I commit if I start working with a coach?

Most coaches ask for a three to six month commitment, but usually let you stop immediately if coaching is not working for you right now. Very, very few coaches ask for a written agreement or contract. For the corporate client, however, a signed agreement is simply good business.

Top

What does it cost to hire a coach?

Most coaches working with individuals charge about $200 to $400 per month for three one half-hour calls per month. Coaches just starting out may charge less and some coaches take on occasional pro-bono clients (meaning they coach for free). Executive coaches and other coaches with exceptional skills or specialties may charge more. Some coaches may work with a client for an hour or two a week. Most coaches tailor their approaches to their clients' needs.
