The Coaching Voyage is your special voyage within a voyage that you take with your coach - or even coaches, since your coach may actually change as your voyage progresses. The Coaching Voyage gets you where you are going faster than working on your own. Your life voyages maybe for business or for pleasure and coaching applies to both. I'd like to suggest that your performance in either a personal or business setting quite often depends on the state of your personal foundation. So don't be surprised if I seem to zig when you want to zag. I may just be pulling out a new page for you to add to your personal sailing directions. The program follows a three part cycle which is applicable on the strategic level and on the everyday level. The three parts are:
Life is a voyage and you are the master Do you think of life as a voyage? Or maybe it's really about many voyages? Then think of you self as the ship. You want to voyage safely, so the condition of your ship matters, right? We have all heard tales of the unique position of power held by ship masters of old. Well, is that really any different from how you should be in your own life? We may not always give ourselves the credit we are due about what powers we really have to influence what goes on in our lives. But I firmly believe that we really do have more power than we give ourselves credit for. We just need to learn how find it and then use it wisely. At the apex of the sailing ship era, also known as "the Age of Sail", sailing ships out of the port of Bristol in England had the reputation for being the best of the best. That reputation set a standard where any well founded ship in top condition was said to be in "Bristol Fashion" which was a great compliment. In coaching terms, the ship is like your personal foundation. This area of coaching builds you up to the point where you are capable of doing and enjoying the things that matter in your life. Coaches can be navigators or pilots, sometimes both As the ship's master you decide where to go, but you can't do it all by yourself. The navigator assists by planning the route, calculating safe courses and plotting positions. An experienced navigator is a valuable asset to a ship master because of his wide knowledge of trade winds and ocean currents. However, the navigator cannot be expected to have the necessary detailed knowledge of every harbour, river bar, sound, channel or archipelago. Here's where a pilot is required who can bring detailed local and specialized knowledge to get you through some tricky parts of your journey. You realize, of course, that your ship must have a capable helmsman and coordinated crew to carry out the pilots directions without fail or hesitation. Otherwise, even having a pilot on board won't keep you off the rocks! In coaching terms, your coach can fill the role of navigator when working on your personal strategy and action plans or the role of pilot when working on specific problems, skills or activities. Your resources determine what you can do and when A voyage requires an investment of resources. This investment is for cargo, provisions, supplies and general upkeep of the ship. Maybe it is even for building a new ship altogether or refitting an old one. Where do these resources come from? Think of them as coming from your reserves. Another way to describe this is with the word "Abundance". The presence of large reserves creates a state of abundance. Another part of your resources is your cargo. Think of the cargo as your value to yourself, the people close to you , and to the market. It is also what you take on board to trade and what you pick up along the way. In coaching terms, this part deals with creating abundance and reserves. Try on these keywords to get you thinking: energy, finances, love, health, mind, money, nutrition, patience, physical, relationships, resolve, stamina, sex, surplus. The sailing plan is your vision and strategy A voyage requires a sailing plan with destinations, courses and reasons for going. You, too, need to know where you are going and why you are going there. You need a sense of direction in your life and a vision of how best to follow it. Where do you go on your voyages? What are your goals, your destinations and reasons for going here and not there? Your vision, strategy, plans and aspirations come into play here. How do you sort it all out and prioritize? These are your sailing directions. In coaching terms, this is about creating a powerful focus and sense of direction in your life. If you are the ship, is it fit for voyaging? To voyage safely and successfully your ship must be in good order. The same goes for everything in it. The Coaching Voyage(tm) is about ensuring that you develop your ship so it can do for you what you want. Let's look at what that involves. Just note that not everything I mention will be of concern to you right now, so we will prioritize what is relevant for you in due time. The sail catches the winds of opportunity In a ship, the sail catches the wind to move forward. In the context of your ship, think of the wind as the opportunities of life. Then ask yourself this: "What is my sail? How do I take advantage of the opportunities that come my way? How ready am I?" Remember, a good sailor knows how to find a wind to keep sailing - he makes his own opportunities. How about you? In the age of sail, the trade routes followed the prevailing wind patterns. The trade winds have not changed, the blow the same way today as they did in the age of sail. Do you know the enduring patterns of opportunity in your life? Are you ready and able to take advantage of them? A powerful concept you will encounter in this area is "attraction" or more precisely, how you can build yourself up to attract what you want in your life rather than having to go chasing after it. Here are some keywords to help you think about creating attraction: attitude, emotion, image, integrity, love, peace, position, respect, status, trust. The keel is your foundation The keel and frames of a ship is the backbone. It is the key to the structural integrity of the whole ship itself. In your ship, the keel represents your basic health, fitness and overall wellness. This is the foundation that you build from in everything you do. The planking represents your integrity The planking of a ship gives shape and form to the hull. It makes the ship useful. In your ship, the planking represents three things:
The ship crew is your support network A voyage of any consequence requires a crew of people who fill many different roles, maybe even more than one role each. A competent crew makes ship board life easier. It is also an important safety factor. In your ship, you can think of this as your support network. This network consists of your family, your friends and anyone else you can turn to for assistance. The oars are your back-ups The wind is its own master and may fail even the best skilled sailor. Our ancestors had a backup solution: they pulled out their oars. Later on as the ships became bigger, the oars became insufficient and other solutions were found. The point is, your ship also needs the right backup and safety features of its own. As you grow, your needs and resources change. You may find yourself graduating into bigger and better ships, or perhaps just into different ships. Or maybe even into a new mode of voyaging altogether.

Too slow for those who wait, Too swift for those who fear, Too long for those who grieve, Too short for those who rejoice; But for those who love, Time is not."
