Goals a Coach Can Help You Achieve

Madonna A coach can help you with most types of goals. It's up to you to decide what goals are important to you and what you want help with. If you're stuck and can't seem to be able to make up your mind right now, that's actually a very common starting point for a lot of coaching relationships.

Developing clarity and sorting out what's ultimately important to you deep down inside, may be a great first step to take. All coaches worth their salt know how to help you get unstuck in a jiffy.

Let's look at the goals first in the context of personal coaching, and then for business or corporate coaching.

Personal coaching

Here is what a fairly recent survey of coaching clients found that coaches had helped with and the results achieved.

Issues or goals worked on with the coach

Time management 80.50%
Career 74.30%
Business 73.80%
Relationships/Family 58.60%
Physical/Wellness 51.90%
Spiritual 51.00%
Personal 45.20%
Goal-setting 39.50%
Financial 38.10%
Creativity 11.00%
Other 1.40%

Most of us recognize these issues as pretty much the same ones we struggle with ourselves. Funny how that works, eh; people are people, including you and I. These are not the only issues people work on with their coaches, of course. Coaching is developing a growing number of specialized services. As coaching becomes ever more established, we can expect that the types of issues dealt with will widen as well.

The results of coaching

Do any of these result look like something you would want to see more of in your life? Most of us would agree. I know I'm looking for a couple myself.

The above are results from personal coaching as you can tell by the absence of business specific types of goals and results. Now, let's look at the business side of things.

Business, corporate or executive coaching

A recent study (Manchester, Inc., 2001) reported a return on investment of 5-6 times the cost of coaching given to 100 executives of mostly Fortune 1000 companies

Improvements identified by the executives themselves were:
  • Higher productivity
  • Better quality
  • Stronger organization
  • Improved customer service
  • Higher shareholder value
  • Fewer customer complaints
  • More likely to retain executives longer

I also want to share with you the results of an older, but very extensive study on the value of building a "performance enhanced business culture".

A performance enhanced culture is one where learning and personal development is accepted and expected to the point where the whole organization has built up a supporting infrastructure, a system, to make this possible and easy.

This study was done at Harvard University for an 11 year time frame. When you see the results, I think you will be impressed. Here is what they concluded:

Measurement With Performance Enhanced Culture Without
Revenue Growth 680% 166%
Employment Growth 282% 36%
Stock Price Growth 901% 74%
Net-Income Growth 756% 1%

What this means to you

For a long time we have had strong anecdotal evidence of coaching successes and the remarkable achievements people have experienced working with coaches. We now have a growing body of independent research results telling us the same story. This should give you increased confidence that coaching as a way to achieve personal and business success works and can deliver on its promise.
