Two headed horse

"I bored me a road there with Rati's tusk
and made room to pass through the rock;
while the ways of the Jötuns stretched over and under,
I dared my life for a draught."

BCVSP Picture Gallery - Viking Ship Promotion Pictures

Hi there! Welcome to the Viking Ship promotion picture gallery!

BCVSP: Promoting the Project

Here's where you can check out the BC Viking Ship Project in action promoting our project to raise funds and inform the community.

About the pictures

These are a collection of pictures from various events we have put on or participated in to promote the project. Some events, like the Keel Raising Ceremony and the Unveiling Ceremony, are covered more fully in their own sections. For these, you'll get a link to the whole story rather than repeat it all over again here.

Vancouver Wooden Boat Show

Digital Norseman: BCVSP Pictures - Olaf Oden and the Digital Norseman

We participated in the Vancouver Wooden Boat Show in the summer of 2000. We brought out our trusted fold-up project poster board, a neat Viking Ship prop and some brochures to let people know what we were up to.

Digital Norseman: BCVSP Pictures - Olaug

The show lasted several days, but we only covered the weekend. Even so, we had to have a relay of supporters manning the stand.

Here is Olaug, one of the many great supporters and fund raisers for the Scandinavian Centre, talking to a visitor.

Jim did a shift as he always does. Here he is chatting with Hilda, our treasurer who came to see the show and how we were doing.

We couldn't let Gordon just hide out behind the camera. Hilda did the honors as shutter bug on that one.

Keel Raising Ceremony

Digital Norseman: BCVSP Pictures - Kids on the keel

The BC Viking Ship Project held its official keel raising ceremony on Sunday September 10, 2000. You can get the whole story and more pictures here.

This picture shows what it's really all about, though. The kids had it figured out right from the start and quickly climbed right up on the keel. (Can't you just imagine the exact same thing happening 1000 years ago, too.)

What a great story to tell the class mates on a Monday morning:

"So, what did you do on the weekend?"

"Well, I sat on the keel of a Viking ship. How about you?"

Top that, if you can.

Media Coverage

Digital Norseman: BCVSP Pictures - Tom Kottmeier and reporter

We had some very interesting media coverage in 2000.

We've been on local TV three times and on national TV once. Just before Christmas of 2000, Shaw Cable TV ran a really well done five minute sequence about our project.

This spring (2001), Global TV has been running TV-spots promoting our Name the Ship contest.

Burnaby NOW, a local newspaper delivered free to all households in Burnaby where we are building the ship, had a picture of us on the front page, recently. The Province, a large BC newspaper, had a great article about us, too, earlier in the year.

Here's our Vice-Chair, Tom Kottmeier, having his photo taken by a reporter for one of the larger Canadian media groups.

Launch Ceremony

Digital Norseman: BCVSP Pictures - Launching "Munin"

On July 7, 2001 we launched "Munin". You can get all the pictures here. As you can see, the our promotion efforts paid off. That's a lot of people crowded onto the launch ramp. It's a bit hard to see, but there are four TV crews out there—and we made the 6 o'clock evening news on Global TV.

Since then, "Munin" has participated in many different events. And every time it goes out into English Bay in Vancouver harbour, it helps promote continued interest in Viking Ships and our Scandinavian cultural heritage.
